RBD emerged in 2004 after the success of the Mexican soap opera, “Rebelde,” made up of its protagonists Anahí, Chistian Chávez, Dulce María, Maite Perroni, Christopher Von Uckermann and Alfonso Herrera. They soon left the small screen in order join the world of pop music in Spanish, a reality that surpassed fiction.
Their debut album, Rebelde [2004], included major Mexican radio hits: “Rebelde,” “Solo Quédate En Silencio,” “Sálvame,” and “Un Poco De Tu Amor.” It earned a Gold Record, Platinum Record and later on a Diamond Record for more that 500,000 copies sold in Mexico. After its success, ‘Rebelde’ was released in a Portuguese version for Brazil.
A Live CD and DVD for their first tour, Tour Generación RBD, was released on July 19th, 2005 and received a Platinum Record in Mexico.
A year later RBD released their second studio album, Nuestro Amor, which marked the band’s evolution since its formation. After selling 127,000 units, the album earned a Platinum Record just 7 hours after being released in Mexico. In May 2006, the album was released in Portuguese under the name Nosso Amor Rebelde and earned a Double Platinum Record for more than 80,000 copies sold in Brazil.
Live In Hollywood is the second live album by RBD, recorded during their first show in Los Angeles at the Pantages Theatre as part of their world tour Tour Generación 2006. The album earned a Double Platinum Record in the United States and Gold Record in Mexico. During their US tour, RBD performed in front of 65,000 people at the Coliseum in Los Angeles, selling every single ticket in just a matter of 30 minutes becoming the second show with the highest income in the venue’s history (right after The Rolling Stones). The band sold out every show in their opening tour in the United States, from Madison Square Garden in New York to the American Airlines Arena in Miami.
Later on, RBD returned to Rio de Janeiro in October 2006 to become the first Spanish-speaking band to headline a concert in the history of the Maracaná Stadium, the largest in the world, before 120,000 fans. The DVD, Live in Río, premiered one year later in Brazil, the United States, and Mexico.
Their third studio album, Celestial, was released in November 2006, catapulting the band to a global level earning Gold Records in Romania, Spain, Chile, and Ecuador as well as Platinum and Gold Records in Mexico. They also conquered the American audience, reaching #1 on the Billboard Latin Pop Albums. In Brazil, the album was equally successful reaching #1 on the main charts. A month later, Celestial was published in Portuguese, debuting at #17 on the Top 30 Albums chart.
After a successful world tour where they sold more than 10 million tickets and established success in the United States, RBD released their English album, Rebels, in 2006. Rebels featured songs “Tu Amor ” and “I Wanna Be The Rain” composed by Grammy Nominee, Diane Warren [has worked with artists such as Aerosmith, Toni Braxton, and Starship]. It earned Gold Records in Mexico, Spain, and Japan.
RBD then released their live album, Tour Celestial 2007. Hecho en España, which was recorded at Vicente Calderón Stadium in Madrid in front of 40,000 spectators.
In a short, yet incredibly successful career that started in 2004 and continued until 2009, RBD became spokespersons for ecological and environmental causes, in addition to showing their pride for their Mexican heritage. Appropriately, RBD was asked to record the track “México, México,” a massive radio hit and official song of the Mexican Football Team for FIFA’s 2006 World Cup.
Empezar Desde Cero [2007], their fifth studio album, earned four Platinum and Gold Records in Mexico, Double Platinum in Venezuela, Platinum in Colombia, and Gold Records in countries such as Brazil, Argentina, and Spain. “Inalcanzable” and “Empezar Desde Cero” off this album reached #2 on Billboard Latin Pop Songs in the United States and #1 in Bolivia.
In 2008, their live album, Live in Brasilia, was recorded in front of half a million spectators at the Ministries Esplanade during the anniversary celebrations of the city of Brasilia, Brazil.
The sixth and last studio album, Para Olvidarte De Mí [2009], was undoubtedly a bittersweet letter to their fans in which they successfully bid farewell to the spotlight, ranking at #3 on the top AMPROFON’s 100 Albums in Mexico and #3 on the Billboard Latin Pop albums for six consecutive weeks.
From Mexico, Colombia, Chile and Brazil all the way to Italy, Turkey, United Kingdom, Japan, Spain, and the United States, RBD broke language barriers and set records from being the first Spanish-speaking band to sell out and headline the Maracaná Stadium in Brazil [2006] to being the most successful and top selling Latin-American band with more than 10 million albums and more than 10 million tickets sold globally.
Today, RBD’s legacy continues through the love and memories of their fans who make up over 150 official fan clubs around the world. RBD, bring back the music!
